Suspect Arrested for Fatal Hit-and-Run

A suspect in a fatal hit-and-run was arrested on Aug. 27, 2011. Madison Earl Howlett, 26, of Battleboro is facing involuntary manslaughter and felony hit-and-run charges after fleeing the scene.

According to reports, the hit-an-run occurred on Aug. 21. Edward Arrington Whitaker Jr., 55, was found dead after being hit by a car near a gas station on N.C. Highway 48 in the Goldrock section of Rocky Mount, police said. Whitaker reportedly died after sustaining head trauma and internal injuries.

Howlett was arrested and placed in the Nash County jail under a $35,000 bond, according to reports. Police have not disclosed how they linked Howlett to the crime.

According to state Department of Correction records, Howlett has a criminal record and was released from jail in June after serving a 10-month sentence for fraud, attempt to sell drugs and violating his probation.
