North Carolina Suspect Captured in Maryland

A man charged with several crimes in North Carolina was caught following a successful escape from a holding cell in Maryland. Bonrick Lee Barksdale, 25, had overpowered a guard and escaped shortly after a judge had denied bail during a hearing in Annapolis District Court.

Barksdale was first arrested on Aug. 26 on a fugitive warrant. Detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police were tipped by police in Greensboro, North Carolina that Barksdale was in the area. He was being sought in North Carolina for a variety of charges, including robbery, kidnapping, attempted 1st degree rape, and 1st degree sex offense.

Barksdale appeared before a District Court Commissioner on Aug. 27, who ordered him held without bond. Before he was transported to the detention facility, Barksdale unsuccessfully attempted to escape, resulting in the added charge of 1st degree escape.

On Sept. 1st Barksdale was taken from the detention facility to appear before a judge at the Annapolis Courthouse on the fugitive warrant.  Following the hearing, Barksdale was placed in the District Court’s holding cells, where he overpowered a guard. He forced the guard to open at least two doors before fleeing on hoot. He ran from the courthouse in the direction of the Admiral Heights neighborhood, where a Deputy in the area spotted and chased him on foot unsuccessfully.

Several law enforcement agencies, including the Annapolis Police Department, Anne Arundel County Police and Sheriff’s, State Police, and Howard County Police Aviation assisted in the manhunt. The authorities conducted a door-to-door search, before locating him at the Park Plaza Hotel in Glen Burnie. He was arrested without incident.
