Raleigh Couple Charged with Murder of Man’s Ex-Girlfriend

Raleigh, N.C. — A North Carolina couple has been charged with murdering and dismembering the man’s ex-girlfriend. A judge in Raleigh said on July 26, 2011 that the couple is being held without bond.

District Court Judge Jacqueline Brewer said Grant Hayes, 32, and Amanda Hayes, 39, will be represented by the public defender’s office unless they hire private defense attorneys on their own.

According to reports, Laura Jean Ackerson, 27, of Kinston was the ex-girlfriend and mother of Grant Hayes’ two children.

A team of divers found parts of her remains in a creek in Fort Bend County, Texas. The remains were positively identified as being Ackerson’s, said Bob Haenel, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

According to Haenel, her feet and hands have not been found. It is unknown if divers will continue to search for the rest of her remains.

Investigators said they found two ice chests near Amanda Hayes’ sister’s house, which is near the creek where the remains were found. The ice chests were cleaned when they found them. They also reported that they found three more ice chests with the couple.

Investigators said they believe the two suspects rented a U-Haul and drove Ackerson’s remains from North Carolina to Texas, which is about 1,000 miles. The truck was allegedly found about 20 miles from the creek where the remains were found.

Investigators also believe the couple used a small boat to dispose of the remains. The boat has been identified, but investigators still do not know who it belongs to.

Authorizes said they believe Ackerson was murdered on July 13, 2011 in Wake County. She had dropped the kids off with Grant Hayes the same day. They were involved in a custody battle for more than one year and were scheduled to meet in family court next month.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Aug. 16, 2011.
